Failbetter Games has released the debut trailer for Sunless Sea, a Kickstarter-funded 2D game of discovery, survival and loneliness. The "Explore" trailer offers fans the first chance to see Sunless Sea in action since the game smashed its crowd-funding target in October last year. It also marks the launch of Sunless Sea on Steam’s Greenlight service
"We’ve made great progress since the Kickstarter,” says Failbetter CEO Alexis Kennedy. “Our backers are really enjoying the game in closed beta and providing reams of useful feedback."
Failbetter plans to open Sunless Sea to Early Access purchase on June 17th via the Humble Bundle platform, and on Steam if their Greenlight campaign succeeds, so that more people can get involved with the game as it develops.
"We're keeping both a roadmap and a public display of how much is complete, to make ourselves accountable to Early Access players,” says Kennedy. “We have all the core features already in place, with more to come before June, but the game world is huge, and we want to be able want to do justice to it."
Failbetter is committing to monthly major updates and frequent smaller content additions until the game is complete, giving players the chance to shape the final game with their feedback.
Set in the same universe as the award-winning browser adventure Fallen London, Sunless Sea puts the player at the helm of a steamship on a vast underground ocean.
"We want to combine the the sense of danger you get from a roguelike games such as Don’t Starve and FTL with the rich storytelling engine we’ve perfected in Fallen London,” says Kennedy, "so while the unexplored areas of the map will shuffle every time you play, there will always be deep and choice-filled stories to discover."
