Hamburg, September 6 th 2013. Goodgame Studios has founded subsidiaries in Japan and Korea. The development means the Hamburg online and mobile game developer will now have a presence in two key markets in the Far East thanks to its own representative offices. "Asia is the market to be in for online games, and therefore it obviously has a leading role to play in our internationalization strategy," explains Dr. Christian Wawrzinek, COO and co-founder of Goodgame Studios. "However, no western gaming company has ever been able to establish itself there in the long term. We want to be the first to do so. To achieve that goal, having local offices with local contact people is absolutely essential."
The reasons behind this strategic decision are both economic and cultural. Indeed, legal regulations and business practices in Japan and Korea are vastly different to those in Europe. Korea, for instance, has strict requirements for online games, which are monitored by the Game Rating Board. Full cooperation with local partners is only possible with a license from this institution. A local office significantly decreases the number of bureaucratic hurdles to overcome to obtain this license. In Japan, contact with important local companies is made much easier, or often only made possible at all by having a local representative. In addition, both subsidiaries reduce the practical difficulties that a seven hour time difference entails.
The Asian market will of course remain a tremendous challenge with many unknowns. However, the first step towards long term success for the games has been made.
