Last saturday, a game was celebriting its 20th birthdays. If you old enough, you will know which game it is. This game, one of the most important and memorable PC games of all time, was released in 1992. Yeah! It's Wolfenstein 3D. In order to celebrite the 20th anniwersary, Bethesda Software has made the full game free-to-play on its site. (Bethesda Software’s parent company, Zenimax, acquired iD Software, the developer of Wolfenstein 3D, in 2009.) That means all three episode are available to play, right now, in your browser. In addition to making the game free-to-play on its site and Facebook, Wolfenstein 3D Classic Platinum for iOS will be free to download today as well. It’s available through iTunes.

I was able to spend some time playing the game and, not surprisingly, I had a good time. It’s a little bit clunky with the framerate feelings quite slow compared to what we’re used to these days, but most of that has to do with how old the game was designed. After all, it was made available 20 years ago, and it shipped on four 3.5-inch floppy disks. Let’s put it this way — the game’s minimum requirement was a 286 processor. Age-related issues aside, it’s Wolfenstein 3D, in all its glory. It’s bloody, not at all safe for work, and quite difficult, but it’s a foundational video game experience.
